Taking a break from my caring role

Lanarkshire Carers has a range of resources available for carers to take a break from caring. This includes available grant funding, discounted and free opportunities to take a break from your caring role as well as other useful information. Taking a break from caring can sometimes be challenging due to personal circumstances or the nature of the caring role, but it is important that carers take some time out now and again. Lanarkshire Carers Centre can support carers to find suitable opportunities to take a break from caring.

Short Breaks

Whether you are a carer or the person being cared for, it is important to take a break from the strains of looking after someone or being looked after. There are various options for short break opportunities and these can vary depending on your individual circumstances. Lanarkshire Carers can provide information on the different types of funding that may be available and can support you to apply for a short break. They can also connect you with a range of other support services to take a break from your caring role.

Respite is a short break, anything from a couple of hours to several weeks, away from caring to give you time to recharge your batteries. You may find that it helps you stay stay well and feel better able to cope with caring. The short break services statement below sets out information about Short Breaks available for you as a carer and how you can access these.

Respitality

Lanarkshire Carers are participating in a project called Respitality in partnership with Shared Care Scotland. Respitality (respite breaks and hospitality) aims to make connections between local organisations that help support unpaid carers and local hospitality providers such as hotels, guest houses, leisure clubs etc. so they can have a short break away from their caring responsibilities to recharge their batteries and have some “me time.  It doesn’t just have to be nights away, other examples might be the gift of a day pass to a leisure club or spa, a voucher for dinner for two or tickets to the theatre.

Carers must have a current Carer Registration Card to access Respitality.

You can apply online for your carer card by visiting: https://lanarkshirecarers.org.uk/carercard
