If you are worried about poo...

You should arrange to see your G.P. or Health Visitor if:

  • your child is pooing a lot
  • they have blood or mucus in their poo
  • they are not growing well
  • they are losing weight fairly rapidly or are often unwell.

There are things you can do to help if you are worried about poo:

  • See your Health Visitor for advice on allergies
  • Diet changes may help, e.g. reduce the amount of fibre as children under 5 don't need as much as adults do.
  • Adjust drink intakes and ensure your child has less sugary drinks and more water.
  • A regular eating pattern and a good balanced diet is important.
  • Encourage your child to go to the toilet regularly to avoid soiling.
  • Teething can cause your child to pick up bacteria which can cause problems going to the toilet. This is a stage they have to go through but it will pass.
