These ideas may help your child going to the toilet
Try these useful hints to see if you can resolve your child not pooing as often as they should:
- Never ignore the urge to go to the toilet, let them go when they need to go.
- Make sure that their feet are flat on the floor or a box.
- A comfortable seated position makes them feel more comfortable and supported.
- Let them take their time so that they are relaxed and don't feel hurried.
- Routines are good for children to form habits. You should have a routine for toileting just like you have routines for eating and other activities.
- Drinking more will encourage more toilet visits. Drinks of water and very dilute fruit juice are the most helpful. Give your child a small drinks bottle and make a goal of drinking a certain number of bottles per day. You could also mark the level on their bottle to keep track of whether they are drinking enough.
- Foods such as soup, ice lollies, and jelly can also increase fluid consumption as they are liquid based.
- Don't, however, let your child drink any more than 1 pint of milk per day. Milk is very filling and your child may end up eating less.
- If they are eating plenty of fibre to try and help their digestion along, then they need to be drinking enough water to make sure this works.
If you have tried these methods and not seen any positive results, we advise that you arrange to see your G.P. or Health Visitor.
