Will my child take to solids straight away? Are there any tips for me?

Here are some hints and tips that may help your child take to solid food:

  • Start when they are settled and not too hungry and not too sleepy, it's better when they are alert and interested. Breakfast may not be such a good time as this is when they are usually more hungry.
  • Talk a child through eating as a process, as it is a skill that needs to be learnt and developed over time.
  • Explain what is happening, just like you do when teaching them to walk, and make sure you have eye contact when feeding them. This makes sure that food is not a surprise and they are expecting to eat.
  • Sit them in a high chair when you eat.
  • Keep to a routine once you feel they are ready to eat. Keep it up and go through the process each time, even if they do not eat.
  • Boundaries and routines are really good for children.
  • Give them the opportunity to eat solid food often. They may not eat every time, but keep going and don't get anxious. They may also spit food out, but that is all part of learning.
  • Give them their own spoon to hold.
  • Put food in a zip lock bag and let them play with it.
  • Put a mat under their high chair which will wipe clean.
